Thursday 25th June saw the 4th PubHack event since we started in September 2013. In the past we’d had the following themes; Post Apocalypse, First World Problems and Awkward Situations. Adding to that, the 4th event’s theme was Blast from the Past.
The judges, Jon Burkart, Laura Sanders, Tom Kentell and Zach Inglis, had a really tough decision, with 11 teams producing some epicly retro projects! So without further a do, here are the results:
PubHack #4 Winner
Nominees: Killdo, Saturday Hackerday Live, Ghettoblaster
Winners:
Team: Where’s Paddy?
Project: Killdo
About the project: Killdo is a game that combines the characters of popular board game Cluedo, and controversial 90’s video game Mortal Combat.
Judges Notes: “The most well designed, fun project. Great combination of two completely unrelated things.”
Best Design
Nominees: Mixta.pe, Killdo, Doc Brown
Winners:
Team: Where’s Paddy?
Project: Killdo
About the project: Killdo is a game that combines the characters of popular board game Cluedo, and controversial 90’s video game Mortal Combat.
Judges Notes: “Most thought out design, impressive aesthetics. Finished looking product, would buy again.”
Best Use of Technology
Nominees: Hackman, Saturday Hackerday Live, Ghettoblaster
Winners:
Team: (SL)Hackers
Project: Saturday Hackerday Live
About the Project: Team (SL)Hackers embraced those ’90’s Saturday morning entertainment programmes and allowed you to phone in to play Pacman with your phone. The winner was then invited up to the stage to accept their prize (a cassette of X-files theme tunes) whilst the loser was brought up to receive his punishment: a gunging. The team built a gunge machine out of lego mechanics, a phone app, a tripod, a bucket of packing peanuts, and a lot of sellotape.
Judges Notes: “Combination of lot’s of tech, purchase of items and use of random stuff to tape it all together!”
Most Original Concept
Nominees: Hackman, Killdo, 90’s Netflix
Winners:
Team: Team Without A Name
Project: Hackman
About the Project: Hackman combined Pacman with beer. Using a beer bottle controller (an accelerometer taped to a beer bottle) you could control Hackman. When it told you to drink, you drank from the bottle to continue the game!
Judges Notes: “Unique controller and PubHack appropriateness!”
Most Likely to Receive a Lawsuit
Nominees: Windows ’20, Knockoffia, Bev-it
Winners:
Team: #DevsDoDesign
Project: Knockoffia
About the Project: Having taken part in the event since PubHack #1, #DevsDoDesign embraced Blast from the Past and took all their previous projects, and made them work within a Nokia 3310.
Judges Comments: “This won because it was an exact ripoff of the Nokia and all your own apps!”
Most Entertaining Entry
